Task, Outdoor & Bath Lighting Best Bets for Business

Posted by Dallas Market Center on December 15, 2020

It’s become an accepted fact that the pandemic has changed the way Americans live and work. As we all spend more time in our homes, household products from furnishings to major remodeling projects have all seen significant jumps in business.

That’s been good for the industry, including the companies that make and sell lighting products. The category has been the beneficiary of these changing lifestyles and a new research project confirms which lighting products have the most to gain.

Home Advisor, a service that connects home improvement services with consumers, titled its latest State of Home Spending Report “2020: The Year of the Home.” While examining how the

home services sector was impacted it offered insight into how homeowners are prioritizing spending. “The combination of social distancing, closed schools, transition to working from home, the sudden loss of appeal of high density living, and closed restaurants has had a lasting impact on both the economy and our daily lives.”

It identified three areas of the home that are being used more and therefore getting more attention from consumers:

  1. Home office: Working from home is of course the biggest change in home usage but it is creating increased demand for office and task lighting, including lighting for online video calls.
  2. Outdoor Living: The survey reported that 27% of respondents said they were focused more on needs for their outdoor spaces, which would include lighting for porches, patios, terraces and backyards.
  3. Bathrooms: The number one most completed remodeling projects this year have been for bathrooms, with the survey suggesting it was a more reasonably sized project than kitchens. Lighting fixtures for vanities, sinks and other spaces would be part of these projects.

The survey suggests these trends will remain for some time. “Homes have always been important, but the once-in-a-century global pandemic has fundamentally shifted the relationship we have with our homes.” The full survey is available at https://www.homeadvisor.com/r/true-cost-report/#ixzz6fPQli0gN
