# Where AI Fits in Your Store: Buy, Sell, Market, Run, Grow

"Okay, AI sounds useful, but where would I actually use it?"

We are glad you asked, and it's the most common question we hear from independent retailers. AI isn't worth your time as a novelty. It's worth your time when it helps with the real work of running a store.

To make it concrete, we have organized RETAIL READY around five parts of your business: Buy, Sell, Market, Run and Grow. Each one answers a question every store owner asks. Here's a quick tour, with one real example for each.

BUY: *What should I buy?*

Buying is where your margins are made or lost, and it's where a little analysis goes a long way. AI can help you review what sold, spot gaps in your assortment, research trends and plan your market trip.

Try this: Export last season's sales report, remove any customer information, and paste it into an AI tool with this request: "*I own a home and gift store. Look at these sales and tell me which categories grew, which slowed down, and what I might be overbuying*." In minutes you'll have a clear summary to guide your next buying decisions, including your next trip to market.

SELL: *How do I sell more of what I bought?*

Great products need great storytelling. AI can help your team understand new merchandise, suggest items to pair together and come up with display ideas.

Try this: When a new line arrives, paste the vendor's product description into AI and ask: "*Turn this into five simple talking points my sales staff can use with customers, plus two items this would pair well with.*" Your team walks onto the floor ready to sell, and you didn't have to write a training guide from scratch.

MARKET: *How do I get customers in the door?*

Marketing is often the first task to slip when you're busy. AI is especially good here. It can help you draft emails, plan social posts and brainstorm event ideas.

Try this: Ask AI: "*Create a four-week social media calendar for a women's boutique in October, with two posts per week. Include a fall fashion theme, a customer appreciation event and a small-business Saturday reminder.*" You'll get a plan you can adjust and schedule in an afternoon instead of scrambling every Monday.

RUN: *How do I get some time back?*

Behind every great store is a lot of repetitive admin work. AI can help you write procedures, draft vendor emails, organize notes and simplify everyday tasks.

Try this: After a staff meeting, paste your rough notes into AI and ask: "*Turn these notes into a clear to-do list with owners and deadlines.*" Or have it draft an opening-and-closing checklist for new hires. Small wins like these add up to hours every month.

GROW: *What should I do next?*

Every owner eventually asks the big-picture questions. Should I add a new category? Host more events? Open a second location? AI can be a thinking partner. It won't make the decision for you, but it helps you look at it from every angle.

Try this: Ask: "*I'm considering adding a children's gift section to my store. What questions should I ask myself before deciding, and what are the risks and opportunities?*" It's like having a business advisor on call, one that helps you think more clearly.

One framework, many possibilities

These five examples are only the beginning and we ARE JUST GETTING STARTED. Over the coming weeks and months, we will dig into each area with short videos, ready-to-use prompts and practical guides built for busy store owners. And when you come to market in January, we'll show you how AI can make your market trip smarter before, during and after you shop.

For now, pick the area that feels most urgent, try the example above and see what happens. You might be surprised how much time you get back.

With Thanks,

\- Alison, Trudi, and Cole
